Major Strategies & Policies

Strategy 1

To help prisoners/detainees by training them in Bible disciplines.

The Bible disciplines include:

  1. Studying the Bible - usually book by book
  2. Learning to read the Scripture publicly
  3. Christian meditation (on themes such as anger management, anxiety, loneliness, violence, revenge etc.)
  4. Scripture memorisation
  5. Hearing the word (learning to get the most from sermons etc)
  6. Applying Scripture so as to live it in oneʼs life.

These disciplines include practical and accessible study methods developed by David Fortune, applied with an emphasis on studying the Bible book by book.

Strategy 2

To provide a website of central resources.

This site is to aid chaplains, church workers, individuals, ex-prisoners, family members of prisoners/detainees and all who will use the material to bring honour and glory to Christ.

To begin with much of the material will be posted at a ‘prototype’ stage and will be revised until it has reached a satisfactory level. But it will always remain a “work in progress” thus an acknowledgement of our inadequacy and a desire to want to improve our work as Christ enables His faltering servants to do so.
You will find studies and “trigger” cards posted as from today. Later we want to include sermon outlines and illustrations along with personal devotion material. As funds permit we want to give PDF helps for HMP and IRC chaplains - such as loose-leaf diary pages geared for prisons and detainee centres where chaplains busily go from wing to wing. We are using prototypes presently to see how helpful they will be.

Strategy 3

To supply resources.

Supplying Scripture 'helps' in dealing with pastoral problems, meditations, pocket booklets on relevant topics such as, the Bible's accuracy, personal devotion, praying, worry, anger etc. Also  providing Sermon CDs, Bible correspondence courses, worship CDs with lyrics in booklets, Bibles, posters and cards and hymn books suitable for leading groups or church services.

The majority of these resources come through Deputations where we offer a "Buy 1 and get 1 free for a prisoner" scheme. Please note the allocation to prisoners and detainees is done by CPR through official channels and you will NOT be able to designate a book to a particular prisoner or detainee.

Strategy 4

To train volunteers

Recruiting volunteers from neighbouring churches and providing regional training courses to teach them how to lead Bible studies in a prison context. To provide ʻon the jobʼ training.

Strategy 5

To nurture church relationships

For example, providing material as for chaplains for use in churches, (e.g. youth meetings, home groups etc.) which will be the same or similar material as that provided for chaplains.

Strategy 6

To gain sponsorship

Obtaining sponsorship to purchase resources for distribution in prisons, and for the support of CPR staff. We believe we are working very much on behalf of the churches.

Strategy 7

To link prisoners and detainees to churches

To link prisoners and detainees to churches that will care for them. Liaise with Resettlement units within Her Majestyʼs Prisons and Immigration Removal Centres informing them of churches that are willing and able to help prisoners on release. Set up a mechanism through HMP/YOI/IRC Resettlement Units so that pastors can visit prisoners before release. Train churches on how to receive prisoners. Churches trained will receive a CPR endorsement and any other practical assistance.

Strategy 8

To co-operate with others

To co-operate with and encourage other Christian organisations with a similar ethos working in prisons as partners in the gospel.
